Images

[edit]

Dear Colleague. Thank you very much for writing a defense for my photo to be deleted. Unfortunately, a group on the Hungarian Wikipedia is in favor of deletions in both articles and images. I would greatly appreciate it and thank you if you (and perhaps other friends of yours from the Global Wikipedia) would write 1-2 lines for the files (now) marked for deletion.

These are currently being deleted: [1], [2], [3]. But recently I have been attacked for having a lot of junk in the pictures I upload (typically of Hungarian buildings, building details, public utilities, natural objects), and for that reason they will be deleted. (I believe that although my pictures are not always sharp and beautiful, they have documentary value about things in Hungary that Google Street View does not film, and sometimes there are no pictures of them on the internet.)

If you are interested, here is the discussion in Hungarian: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szerkeszt%C5%91vita:12akd#Commons. (I wrote my arguments there to other Hungarian editors, but they don't accept them. They only look at how aesthetic a picture is. Wikipedia is not an Art Album, where there can only be beautiful pictures of beautiful things - although those are good too, of course. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, where in my opinion there is also a place for manhole covers, garbage cans, and dilapidated parts of buildings.)

I respectfully ask you and your English / French / etc. friends who are at home in the world of Global Wikipedia to help me preserve my photographs, because due to the demolition of many buildings / changes in the environment, they will one day have historical-documentary value for Hungary.

You can see my many uploaded photos, many of them over the years, of things in Hungary, especially Budapest, here: [4]

Thank you very much for reading, with respect: 12akd (talk) 07:29, 13 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I call things as I see them on Commons deletion requests, but I don't think I should try to participate in Hungarian-language Wikipedia discussions, and as a result of this kind of request, you risk being accused of canvassing.
I do generally agree with your point of view, but Wikipedia is indeed not an art album and it is Commons and not Wikipedia that is at issue here. It's perfectly reasonable for Wikipedians to choose which Commons images to use in Wikipedia articles, but not to delete photos from Commons just because, as you say, they're of ordinary things that are not beautiful.
You might want to rephrase this message to make it an argument only and not a request for participation on hu.wikipedia, and perhaps start a thread on Commons talk:Deletion requests or somewhere else more appropriate that I can't think of right now.
Best,

Hi. I expressed opinions or asked questions about some of them, but I don't think my opinions are really needed for admins to make decisions. Do you know I'm not a Commons admin? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:35, 30 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Old logo deletion

[edit]

Hello i wanted to open the discussion on this. The reason we (brand managers from commercial businesses) request old logo deletion is because google pulls old logos from Wikipedia and this means old logos appear all over the web along with your current logo. This is damaging to commercial brands as they become inconsistent and it is confusing to audiences. This is why we request deletion of old logos to prevent this market confusion. Please consider policy change here. Could you also consider unindexing/tagging old logos so that google does not scrape them. TCSBrandTeam (talk) 14:08, 4 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

You're not going to get a policy change by posting to a user's talk page. You could try Commons talk:Deletion policy. In any case, I will continue to strongly oppose. The options for you are to edit file descriptions and request Commons:File renaming. Memory-holing history is not a function of this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:08, 4 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Please help me

Hello Ikan Kekek, an editor desires to block me even if I have done nothing wrong. I just add evidence to contradict the accusations, thank you CNEcija12345 (talk) 11:17, 7 April 2025 (UTC).Reply

Vandalism

[edit]

Hello; [5] This user has vandalized the Ardebilak image page that belongs to me and arbitrarily removed the deletion tag.(Aflatooni 2050 (talk) 16:03, 30 April 2025 (UTC))Reply

I see that, but I am not an administrator on this site, so there is nothing I can do. If they do it again, you should start a COM:ANU thread.
Best,

Hi Aflatooni 2050 and Ikan Kekek: I've taken care of this, see User talk:۲۱ آذر ۱۳۲۵#Disruptive editing. Please note that you can always ask users in such cases to refrain from such edits. Every user can do this. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 18:12, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Comment

[edit]

Just a side point but in my experience there's a real issue with people nominating images for deletion as COPYVIO in cases where the uploader can't realistically verify they created the photograph because of long ago the files were uploaded, them not being active anymore, Etc. Etc. Not to say I have any clue what to do about it since obviously files shouldn't get a free pass just because the uploader can't confirm the license but it is something I run into more often I'd like to. Maybe that's something to think about coming up with a policy or some kind of guideline for though. It would help mitigate a lot of the more questionable speedy deletion requests. The current way things are handled isn't necessarily fair to uploaders anyway. Like someone should have to be a lifelong contributor to not risk their files being deleted but I don't know what the alternative is with how things are currently. --Adamant1 (talk) 10:39, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I agree with your analysis of the problem. I don't think that we should assume an upload is bad because it's someone's only upload or it was uploaded a long time ago. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:34, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand your position on the fictional logo for Los Cabos International Airport

[edit]

Specifically, Commons:Deletion requests/File:LCAAI.jpg.

It sounds like you've never been to Mexico; to date, I have vacationed there nine times. Any experienced traveler knows that most Mexican international airports are operated by regional corporations and the airports don't actually have local logos, they operate under the regional corporation's logo. That is the case with Los Cabos International Airport.

So if I'm reading your position correctly, it's okay for me to invent, for example, an entirely fictional logo for Microsoft Corporation, or San Francisco International Airport, and then I can upload it to Commons under a Creative Commons license, and then transclude it into in multiple Wikipedia articles, and the transclusion in and of itself on WP immunizes the file from deletion from Commons? That sounds insane.

If your interpretation of current Commons policy is a faithful one, then we need to have a massive RFC at some point on how Commons policy has completely gone off the rails. Coolcaesar (talk) 05:18, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

This is all irrelevant to COM:INUSE. Read that, and if you want to argue with it, do so at Commons talk:Project scope. I have no position on the accuracy or inaccuracy of a file that's in use, so there's no point whatsoever in arguing with me about that. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:54, 17 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Glad to see your thoughtful and carefully considered comments on FPC again, I missed them for a long while! A couple of months ago someone commented that FPC "support"s were degrading to Facebook likes. Tagooty (talk) 11:53, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Information on temporary account IP viewer rights

[edit]

Hello Ikan Kekek,

On November 12, temporary accounts will be enabled on Commons. The IP of unregistered users will then be hidden for most users. You, as a patroller or license reviewer, are eligible to request the new temporary account IP viewer right, if you need it to continue fighting vandalism and abuse on Commons. If you want to request the right, please file the request here. Please be aware that you also have to accept the Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy in your preferences. For more information about temporary accounts, look at the project page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:34, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Photo Critique Request

[edit]

Hi Ikan Kekek, would you mind helping me critique this photo if it matches FP? Due to evironment restriction, this is the furthest point I can take a photo. And it can't correct perspective distortion, otherwise the horizontal line would become a curve. I'd like to hear your opinion, thank you. 瑞丽江的河水 (talk) 11:13, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi. It's good - sharp, high-resolution, detailed, and of a nice motif. I don't think it would pass on FPC because the reviewers there usually object to perspective distortion, but I have guessed wrong about results of nominations there several times recently. The blue in the sky might be a little dark and toward the gray side.
Best,

I apologize

[edit]

I truly didn't mean to offend anyone personally, and I apologize if it came across that way. I'm a human being, not a robot, and sometimes my Greek temperament takes over. I hope we can now put this incident to rest and that it won't have any further consequences for peaceful coexistence here on Commons. I will now concentrate on my actual goal: photographing all the villages in the municipality of Sitia and uploading them to Commons. I hope you accept my apology. Best regards. Petro Stelte (talk) 06:24, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

You really don't need to apologize to me, but I would be ungracious not to accept. Onward. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:22, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm the user who brought forward the deletion discussion of File:Arnoldo Martínez Verdugo en 1971.jpg. Just wanted to inform you that I followed your advice and edited the file description to reflect its status. In the meantime, I extracted a file depicting the actual Martínez Verdugo, File:Arnoldo Martínez Verdugo in 1971.jpg, and replaced the deprecated file in the projects using it with the new file. Language question: “delist(ing) candidate”

[edit]

Hi Ikan, I need a little help from a native speaker. Working on improvements for FPCBot and on some new archival categories for featured picture nominations, I still wonder what the correct English expression is when people nominate existing featured pictures for delisting.

  1. People often just call this a “featured picture delist candidate” or “featured picture delist nomination”.
  2. Somehow I think that “featured picture delisting candidate” and “featured picture delisting nomination” would be better.
  3. Or are both phrases bad and we must use “featured picture candidate for delisting” and “featured picture nomination for delisting”?

Could you give me a hint what is correct – 1 or 2, or must we use 3? Or something else? Thank you very much! – Aristeas (talk) 10:47, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'd use "Candidates for delisting from featured picture status". -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:54, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! Your suggestion is really lucid and avoids any misunderstandings. I will use this phrase and the corresponding “candidates for featured picture status” for the comments in the FPCBot code and in other places, and I have renamed the new candidate archive categories according to your wording, because it makes it much clearer what the difference is between the different types of nominations. It’s good to have that done and to use clear category names before we add these categories to all the old nominations from the previous years. Thank you again and all the best, – Aristeas (talk) 20:07, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
My pleasure!

Hello! Some months ago you reviewed a deletion request of this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caixa_Econ%C3%B4mica_Federal_logo.svg At the time, the file was linked at many other Wikipedia pages, so the deletion was denied. Now the file does not have any links to it anymore, so I opened a new deletion request. Can you review it again? Thanks! Bazem (talk) 02:48, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
